Sample Mode: Intro To Sound Design, Beat-Making, And Creative Music Technologies.
A Berkeley Changemaker ® Course

Course led by Nassirah Nelson.

Sample Mode is a12-week course offered in collaboration with the University of Berkeley Changemaker® program and Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation. Emphasizing the Berkeley Changemaker pillars of critical thinking, collaboration, and communication, students design, create, and perform original music using electronic instruments, music production software, and midi-controllers. Sample Mode also examines the history of sampling, its role in hip-hop, and its legacy in music production. Students connect with and learn from industry professionals, each week. Class sessions are complemented by community beat-making showcases and performances opportunities that enable students to practice course content in front of an audience and receive feedback. Midway through the semester students have an opportunity to build their very own midi-controller, as well as design a custom faceplate in a makerspace environment.er community.
